How AI is changing how customers discover products

The way customers find and evaluate products is changing more rapidly than at any point since the rise of search engines. AI-powered discovery tools are becoming a meaningful part of how people research purchases, find solutions, and evaluate alternatives, and the implications for marketing strategy are significant.

The shift from search to conversation

Traditional product discovery was search-led. A customer typed a query into Google, received a list of links, and clicked through to evaluate options. The customer did the synthesis.
AI-powered discovery changes that. A customer asking an AI assistant for a recommendation, or asking it to compare options in a category, receives a synthesised answer. The AI does the synthesis. The customer receives a recommendation, a comparison, or an evaluation, often without visiting any company's website.
This means that companies which do not appear in AI-generated answers to relevant questions are effectively invisible to a growing segment of customers in the research phase, regardless of how well they rank in traditional search.

What this changes for early-stage marketing

The content and presence that made a company visible in traditional search is necessary but not sufficient for AI-driven discovery. Being present in the conversations that AI systems are trained on, and cited by the sources those systems treat as authoritative, matters in ways that did not previously apply.
Reviews, mentions in credible publications, presence in relevant communities, and content that gets linked to and cited by others all contribute to the kind of digital footprint that AI systems use to understand what a company is, what it does, and whether it is a credible recommendation in a given category.

The opportunity for startups willing to move first

Most established companies are not yet thinking systematically about AI discovery. The companies that start building content and presence optimised for AI citation now, when the space is less crowded, are likely to have a meaningful advantage over those that wait until AI-driven discovery is well established and the space is competitive.
This is a rare instance where moving early in a channel, before best practices are fully established and before competition is intense, is likely to produce lasting advantages rather than just first-mover learning.
AI systems are becoming a meaningful discovery channel. Being cited in AI answers matters alongside ranking in search results. Build for both.
